Based on the novel (1993) by Irvine Welsh, written by John Hodge. Set in a suburb of Edinburgh, is the story of a drug addict Mark and his band of friends: ugly, dirty, bad and thieves, but in their insolence ribald elicit pain and sympathy rather than fear or disgust. And 1 movie that explicitly tells a story of drug addicts from their point of view. The context is not embellished. The young Boyle and his screenwriter Hodge have no bias in the story, as they do not offer excuses for their inert self-destructive results. A figurative level, the director of photography Brian Tufano and production designer Kave Queen were inspired by the paintings of Francis Bacon, with their hallucinatory mix of reality and fantasy, but also Scorsese, Almodovar, Kubrick (Clockwork Orange ).
